Shelby County Commission to Appoint Interim District 9 Member in Today’s Session

Shelby County Commission to Appoint Interim District 9 Member in Today’s Session
The Shelby County Board of Commissioners is scheduled to convene this afternoon, Monday, March 9, 2026, for a significant legislative session that includes the appointment of a new interim representative for District 9. The meeting will take place at 3:00 p.m. in the first-floor commission chambers at the Vasco A. Smith, Jr. County Administration Building in downtown Memphis.
Filling the District 9 Vacancy
The primary item on today’s agenda is the selection of an interim commissioner to fill the seat vacated by former Commissioner Edmund Ford Jr. The vacancy was officially declared in February following Ford’s resignation as part of a federal plea agreement. After conducting candidate interviews last week, the commission is set to take nominations and hold a formal vote during today's session. The appointed individual will serve on the board until a permanent successor is chosen by voters during the August 2026 general election.
Community Grants and Infrastructure
Beyond the appointment process, the commission will consider several resolutions aimed at local development and public safety. Highlights of the agenda include:
- South Memphis Development: A proposed $250,000 one-time grant to the South Memphis Renewal Community Development Corporation. This funding, sponsored by Commissioner Henri E. Brooks, is intended to support community-driven strategic priorities and revitalization efforts.
- School Safety: Approval of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and three municipal school districts. This agreement would allow the Sheriff's Office to apply for state reimbursement funding for School Resource Officers (SROs).
- Tax Property Sales: The sale of 19 county-owned delinquent tax parcels to various purchasers. This move is designed to return these properties to productive use and generate approximately $146,450 in revenue for the county.
- Financial Reporting: The formal receiving and filing of the Second Quarter Report for Shelby County Government for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026.
Public Participation and Access
As the primary legislative body for the county, the Commission encourages public engagement. Residents wishing to comment on today's agenda items may do so in person by requesting a public comment card at the meeting. Alternatively, the county offers remote options for participation, including email submissions and a dedicated call-in line. The proceedings will also be broadcast live on the commission's official YouTube channel and the Granicus streaming system for those unable to attend at the 160 North Main Street location.
While the Shelby County Commission handles county-wide legislative matters today, the Memphis City Council is not in session. According to the city’s official 2026 meeting schedule, the Council’s next regular meeting is set for Tuesday, March 24.
