What happened

A school bus crash in west Tennessee on Friday, March 27, 2026, left two students dead and sent multiple injured people to hospitals by air ambulance, including patients transported to Memphis-area trauma care. The collision occurred around noon on Highway 70 in Carroll County and involved a school bus, a Chevrolet Trailblazer and a Tennessee Department of Transportation dump truck.

Authorities said the sequence of events remained under investigation late Friday. Initial briefings indicated the dump truck did not appear to have caused the crash, though investigators continued to sort out the circumstances and vehicle movements leading up to the impact.

Who was on the bus and where it was headed

Officials reported a total of 25 students and five adults were on the bus. The trip was connected to Kenwood Middle School in Clarksville, with the bus carrying students and employees on a field trip to Jackson, Tennessee.

The deaths of two students were announced during a news conference Friday. The names of the victims were not immediately released.

Injuries and medical response

At least seven other people were transported by air ambulance to hospitals in Tennessee. The nature and severity of those injuries were not disclosed in initial official updates. Separately, four patients were reported in stable condition at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville.

In addition, 19 people were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital–Carroll County for evaluation and were released. It was not immediately clear how many of those evaluated were confirmed to have been injured, reflecting a common early challenge in large incidents where patients are transported for precautionary assessment.

What investigators will focus on next

Tennessee Highway Patrol investigators typically examine vehicle damage patterns, roadway evidence, electronic data where available, driver statements, and any video sources to reconstruct how the collision occurred. In multi-vehicle incidents on high-speed corridors like Highway 70, investigators also evaluate visibility, lane positioning, and potential avoidance maneuvers, as well as whether any mechanical issues contributed.

Counseling services were scheduled to be available for students beginning Monday as the school community prepared for the return to classes after the crash.

The investigation remained ongoing as of Friday night, with additional details expected as authorities complete scene reconstruction and review medical and witness information.
