Memphis Traffic and Transit Outlook for February 14, 2026

Drivers in Memphis should prepare for a challenging commute this Saturday, February 14. A combination of significant weather alerts and ongoing infrastructure projects across Shelby County is expected to slow travel times, particularly as Valentine’s Day evening celebrations begin. Heavy rain is the primary concern for the evening hours, with the National Weather Service forecasting up to three inches of rainfall through Saturday night. This may lead to isolated flooding on major arteries and ponding in low-lying areas, especially after sunset.

Major Roadworks and Lane Closures

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) continues its $160 million paving and repair initiative across the city's busiest highways. While much of the work is scheduled for overnight periods, several long-term projects remain active today:

  • I-240 Eastbound: Maintenance and concrete repair work continue near Mile Marker 18. Drivers should be alert for shifting patterns and right-lane closures that may persist through the weekend.
  • I-55 at E.H. Crump Boulevard: The long-term interchange reconstruction project remains a significant bottleneck. Expect narrowed lanes and frequent speed limit reductions near the Memphis-Arkansas Bridge.
  • Poplar Avenue (SR-57) and Walnut Grove: Periodic lane shifts are in effect as part of the multi-year resurfacing project. Avoid these routes if possible during peak evening hours to bypass congestion near entertainment districts.
  • State Route 3 (North Second St/U.S. 51): Construction between Log Mile 3 and 4 is reducing traffic to a single lane in certain sections, with work expected to continue into 2027.

Public Transport and MATA Updates

The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) has resumed full fixed-route and MATAPlus services following the winter weather disruptions earlier this month. However, riders should be aware of the following:

  • Trolley Suspension: Main Street trolley service remains suspended as of this weekend. Shuttle buses are providing alternative transport along the Main Street corridor.
  • Rain-Related Detours: While no major system-wide detours are currently active, MATA officials warn that heavy localized flooding could trigger temporary route adjustments on Saturday evening. Riders are encouraged to monitor the MATA Tracker for real-time bus locations.

Valentine’s Day Evening Advisory

With heavy rain predicted to peak after sunset, visibility will be limited for those traveling to dinner and events in Midtown, Overton Square, and Downtown. High traffic volumes are anticipated near the FedExForum and the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art due to scheduled performances and candlelight concerts. Commuters are advised to allow an extra 20 to 30 minutes for travel and to utilize rideshare services where possible to mitigate parking congestion in the rain.
