Tennessee man convicted in Memphis bank robbery conspiracy involving eight defendants and more than $160,000 stolen

Verdict caps federal case involving multiple armed robberies across Memphis-area banks
A federal jury in Memphis has convicted Tennessee resident Mario Patterson, 45, for his role in a bank robbery conspiracy that targeted multiple Memphis-area bank branches in 2023. Prosecutors said the conspiracy involved eight defendants and operated over roughly eight months, from April through December 2023.
The verdict makes Patterson the final defendant convicted in a broader federal case that alleged a coordinated series of armed robberies and related firearm offenses. Court filings and trial evidence described a pattern of robberies in which weapons were displayed, employees and customers were threatened, and getaway roles were assigned among participants.
What the jury found
Jurors found Patterson guilty of robbing three banks and of participating in a conspiracy that authorities said carried out five bank robberies in total. Investigators stated that the group also attempted a robbery, and at least one bank branch was targeted twice during the conspiracy period.
Evidence presented at trial described Patterson as armed during each of the robberies attributed to him. In one attempted robbery, authorities said Patterson fired an assault-style rifle and shot two people. In another incident described in court, prosecutors said Patterson wore body armor and pointed a rifle at bank employees while another participant took cash from the bank.
Scope of losses and timeline
By the end of 2023, authorities calculated that the conspiracy had stolen more than $160,000 from banks in the Memphis area. The charged conduct focused on robberies committed during the April–December 2023 window, reflecting what prosecutors characterized as a sustained effort rather than isolated events.
- Timeframe: April 2023 to December 2023
- Defendants charged in the conspiracy: eight
- Total bank branches robbed in the conspiracy: five
- Total amount reported stolen: more than $160,000
- Patterson’s convictions: three bank robberies and conspiracy
Sentencing and prior outcomes for co-defendants
Patterson is scheduled to be sentenced on April 24, 2026. Sentencing in federal court can include consideration of the offenses of conviction, the presence and use of firearms, injury to victims, criminal history, and other factors addressed in federal statutes and the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
Three co-defendants in the same case received prison terms in late 2025: Robert Haley was sentenced to 17 years, Devin Hinds to 16 years and one month, and Joshua Cribbs to 12 years. Authorities have stated that all defendants charged in the broader conspiracy have now been convicted either by guilty plea or by trial verdict.
The case centered on a series of armed robberies that prosecutors said placed bank employees, customers, and bystanders at risk, including an attempted robbery that ended with two people shot.
