What happened

A police pursuit involving a stolen Jeep ended in a multi-vehicle crash in El Cajon, California, leading to the detention of two men and damage to two unrelated motorists’ vehicles. Police said the suspects attempted to flee at high speed after an officer identified the Jeep as stolen during a license-plate check.

Investigators said the incident began at about 8 p.m. when an officer ran the vehicle’s plates and learned the Jeep had been reported stolen. The driver then accelerated away, entering State Route 94 and traveling through multiple areas before the pursuit ended at a surface-street intersection in El Cajon.

Crash and immediate aftermath

Police said the fleeing Jeep struck two vehicles that were stopped at a traffic light. One driver reported being hit from behind and pushed into a guardrail. The Jeep then collided with a second vehicle and sustained a blown tire, which authorities described as a factor in ending the flight.

After the crash, police said the two suspects exited the Jeep and ran. One was located by a police K-9 in a gully and was apprehended after being bitten by the dog. The second suspect was found about a block away and taken into custody.

Police said the two suspects were transported by ambulance to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Injuries and damage

Authorities said the two motorists struck in the crash were not injured. The primary injuries reported were to the two suspects, who were taken for medical evaluation and treatment.

Police had not publicly confirmed the suspects’ names or announced specific charges at the time of the initial incident summary. In cases involving alleged vehicle theft and flight from officers, charges can depend on evidence gathered after arrest, including the vehicle’s reported status, any property recovered, and driving-related offenses connected to the crash.
