Commission Resumes Business After Weather Delays

The Shelby County Board of Commissioners is scheduled to convene for its regular meeting today, Monday, February 2, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. The session will be held in the First Floor Commission Chambers at the Vasco A. Smith, Jr. County Administration Building, located at 160 North Main Street in downtown Memphis. This meeting marks a significant return to legislative activity as the county begins to resume normal operations following a severe winter storm that impacted the Mid-South throughout late January.

Today’s session is a reconvened meeting originally intended for January 26, 2026. That meeting was officially postponed due to hazardous road conditions and extreme cold, which prompted a multi-day closure of various government facilities. As county offices transitioned back to normal operational status this morning, the Commission moved forward with today's scheduled time to address a backlog of resolutions, funding requests, and departmental reports that were deferred during the weather emergency.

Key Agenda Focus and Regional Context

While the Commission focuses on catching up with county business, the broader political and educational landscape in Memphis remains affected by the recent freeze. Although the County Commission is meeting, other major public institutions have remained shuttered for the day. Notable closures today include:

  • Memphis-Shelby County Schools: All district offices and schools are closed today, February 2, with all extracurricular activities and athletic events canceled.
  • Memphis Municipal Courts: The City of Memphis Court Clerk’s office and municipal courts have remained closed through today.
  • City Government: The Memphis City Council is not in session today; however, it is scheduled to hold its regular committee and board meetings tomorrow, Tuesday, February 3.

Mayor Paul Young and other city leaders continue to monitor the recovery of municipal infrastructure. As the Commission meets at 3:00 p.m., residents and stakeholders are watching for updates regarding the impact of the storm on the county budget and emergency service allocations. The successful convening of today’s meeting is seen as a pivotal step in clearing the legislative docket before the arrival of the Mayor’s State of the City address later this month.

Public Participation and Access

In accordance with standard procedures, the meeting is open to the public for in-person attendance. For those unable to travel to the Vasco A. Smith, Jr. building, the proceedings will be live-streamed through the Commission’s official YouTube channel and the Granicus digital archive system. Members of the public who wish to provide comments were encouraged to register through the Board of Commissioners' office prior to the start of the session. This afternoon’s meeting is expected to set the tone for the county's legislative priorities as February gets underway.
