Severe Winter Storm Cripples Memphis Commute; I-55 Impassable and MATA Routes Limited

Dangerous Road Conditions Across the Mid-South
Memphis is currently facing the third day of a historic winter storm, resulting in extremely hazardous driving conditions throughout the metropolitan area. The Tennessee Highway Patrol and local authorities have urged residents to stay off the roads as freezing temperatures continue to create thick layers of ice and downed trees across major thoroughfares. As of Wednesday morning, January 28, 2026, many primary routes are considered treacherous, with visibility and traction significantly reduced.
Major Interstate Disruptions and I-55 Closure
Commuters heading south should be aware of a critical situation on Interstate 55. The DeSoto County Sheriff's Office has issued an emergency alert declaring southbound I-55 impassable after the Hernando exit. Multiple semi-trucks have stalled near mile marker 257, leading to a standstill that has left some travelers stranded for hours. The Mississippi Department of Transportation reports delays of at least two hours in this corridor and has advised drivers to turn around immediately.
Additionally, Interstate 22 is seeing significant congestion with several disabled vehicles reported. On the Tennessee side, a scheduled long-term maintenance project on I-55 Southbound at Mile Marker 3.6 continues to block the left lane and shoulder, further complicating flow for those attempting to navigate the snowy conditions. Dark traffic signals have also been reported at several city intersections due to power interruptions; these must be treated as four-way stops.
MATA Activates Limited Snow Routes
The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) has moved to a restricted service plan for Wednesday. To ensure the safety of both passengers and staff, MATA is operating only five specific routes from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., provided road conditions allow. The active routes are:
- Route 11 – Frayser
- Route 39 – South Third (terminating at Shelby Drive due to ice)
- Route 42 – Crosstown
- Route 50 – Poplar
- Route 52 – Jackson
All other services, including the Trolley lines, Groove On Demand, and Ready! services, remain suspended until further notice. MATAPlus is prioritizing medical and dialysis patients, and transit centers are serving as warming stations during limited daytime hours.
City Closures and Safety Reminders
Memphis Municipal Courts and the City of Memphis Court Clerk's office are closed today. For those who must travel, officials recommend carrying an emergency kit and maintaining a significant following distance. Warming centers remain open at the William Hudson and Airways Transit Centers for those in need of shelter from the extreme cold.
