Weather-Related Closures and Delays
Following a period of inclement winter weather, several municipal and county services remain impacted today, Monday, February 2, 2026. The following closures and delays have been issued by city and county officials to ensure the safety of residents and employees:
- Memphis-Shelby County Schools: All district schools and administrative offices are closed today. This closure includes the cancellation of all after-school activities, sports practices, and athletic events.
- Shelby County Health Department: All health department facilities have delayed their opening until 9:00 a.m. this morning. Services are being offered at four primary locations across the county.
- Municipal Courts: In the interest of public safety, the Memphis Municipal Courts and the City of Memphis Court Clerk’s office are closed today. Residents are advised to monitor official channels for rescheduling information.
Resumption of Public Operations
While some services remain suspended, others have successfully transitioned back to standard operating schedules as road conditions improve within the city limits and along major corridors.
- Parks and Recreation: Memphis Parks have returned to normal operations as of 8:00 a.m. today. Community centers and neighborhood parks are once again available for public use.
- County Board of Commissioners: The Shelby County Board of Commissioners' office has officially resumed normal business operations following the winter weather event.
- Transportation Services: MATA is continuing to monitor road conditions while maintaining limited snow route operations. Riders are encouraged to check the transit agency’s emergency notification system for specific detour details on major routes, including the 50 Poplar and 57 Park.
Official Notice: Upcoming City Council Meeting
The Memphis City Council is scheduled to hold a series of meetings tomorrow, Tuesday, February 3, 2026. The session will begin with Committee meetings at 8:30 a.m., followed by the Regular Council Meeting at 4:00 p.m. at City Hall.
- Recognition of Fire Department Leadership: The Council is set to consider a resolution honoring Gina Sweat for her years of dedicated service to the Memphis Fire Department and the City of Memphis.
- Public Hearing for Property Development: A planned development resolution will be considered regarding the subject property located at 6450 Kirby Gate.
- Public Attendance: Citizens may attend the proceedings in person at the City Council Chambers or access the meetings via the official live stream portal, YouTube, or 88.5 FM WQOX radio.
Utility and Health Advisories
Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) reports that the city’s water system is currently operating within normal ranges. However, crews remain active 24/7 to locate and repair water main breaks caused by freezing temperatures. Residents should report active leaks or service interruptions to the utility's emergency line. Additionally, the Shelby County Health Department has issued a public notice regarding the upcoming Air Pollution Control Board meeting scheduled for Friday, February 6, 2026.
Administrative Deadlines
Parents and guardians are reminded that the 2026-27 School Choice application window for Memphis-Shelby County Schools is scheduled to open tomorrow, Tuesday, February 3, at 10:00 a.m. Applications must be submitted through the district’s online enrollment portal.
