Winter Weather Emergency and Road Conditions
Mayor Paul Young has signed an extension of the State of Emergency for the City of Memphis due to the continued impact of severe winter weather and lingering ice. Public Works crews are operating under a priority-based ice mitigation plan. Efforts remain focused on primary streets and emergency routes to ensure access for first responders. Secondary and neighborhood streets may remain icy as temperatures fluctuate.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has also begun statewide pothole repairs following the recent storm. In Shelby County, motorists should expect lane closures on Interstate 240 Eastbound near mile marker 18.6 through February 6. Crews will attempt to conduct repairs between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to minimize peak-hour traffic disruptions.
Warming Centers and Social Services
To support vulnerable populations during the ongoing cold weather, 24-hour warming centers remain open across the city. The City of Memphis, in partnership with local non-profits, is providing overnight shelter and resources for those in need of a heated environment. Residents are advised to check the City’s official website or call local emergency management for the nearest active location.
Utility and Waste Collection Notices
Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) reports that the water system is currently operating within the normal range; however, crews remain on 24-hour standby to address potential water main breaks caused by frozen ground. Additionally, curbside garbage and recycling collection remains temporarily suspended or delayed in several areas due to hazardous road conditions on residential routes. Residents are asked to leave their bins at the curb as crews work to resume a normal schedule as safety permits.
Public Comment: National Park Service Review
The National Park Service is currently seeking public comment regarding the evaluation of several historic sites in the Memphis and Shelby County area for potential inclusion in the National Park System. Virtual and in-person community meetings are being scheduled for the coming weeks to gather feedback on these designations.
