City of Memphis Government Closures for President's Day

In observance of the President's Day holiday, the City of Memphis has announced that all non-essential government offices will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026. This closure includes City Hall at 125 N. Main Street and various administrative divisions across the city. Regular operations and office hours are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, February 17, at 8:30 a.m. While administrative offices are closed, emergency services including the Memphis Police Department and Memphis Fire Department remain fully operational.

Revised Solid Waste Collection Schedule

The Solid Waste Management division has issued a public notice regarding mandatory changes to residential trash and recycling pick-up for the holiday week. Residents are advised to follow the adjusted timeline to ensure service:

  • Monday and Tuesday Customers: Residents who normally receive collection services on Monday, February 16, or Tuesday, February 17, should place their carts at the curb on Tuesday morning. Crews will work through both routes starting Tuesday.
  • Wednesday through Friday Customers: There are no changes for mid-to-late week residents; please place carts out on your regularly scheduled days.
  • Additional Services: City crews will be working overtime throughout the week to restore normal collection cycles by the close of business on Friday. Excess trash and yard waste services may be limited during this holiday window.

Residents serviced by private contractors like Team Waste will receive normal collection service during the week of February 16 and should follow their standard schedule.

MLGW Infrastructure Alert: North Parkway Lane Closure

Commuters are advised of a significant long-term traffic disruption currently active on North Parkway. Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) has initiated the construction of new underground electric infrastructure in the area. The eastbound section of North Parkway at Manassas Street is closed to through traffic. This closure, which began on February 13, is expected to last for approximately three months. Official detours are clearly marked, and motorists are encouraged to plan for extra travel time during peak morning and evening commute hours.

Utility Advisories: Billing and Service Updates

MLGW has released critical notifications for all residential and commercial customers regarding utility management this month:

  • Increased February Billing: Due to extreme cold temperatures recorded in January, many residents may experience higher-than-average utility bills this month. MLGW has confirmed that energy consumption reached near-record levels, which may result in significant increases for heating costs.
  • Resumption of Disconnections: Following a temporary suspension during last month's winter storms, MLGW has officially resumed service disconnections for non-payment.

Customers facing financial hardship are urged to act immediately by contacting MLGW to discuss payment arrangements or by applying for assistance through the Shelby County Community Services Agency.
