State of Emergency and Winter Weather Response

Mayor Paul Young has officially extended the State of Emergency for the City of Memphis through Sunday, February 1, 2026. This extension follows a significant winter storm that impacted the region with a mix of snow and sleet. Public Works crews remain deployed 24/7 to execute the city’s snow and ice mitigation plan. While main thoroughfares are being treated with over 2,000 tons of salt and brine, residential and secondary roads may remain treacherous due to refreezing overnight. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and monitor the live Snow/Ice Mitigation Map for real-time updates on cleared routes.

Public Transportation and Warming Center Shuttles

The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) continues to operate on limited snow routes today, Sunday, February 1. Commuters should expect significant detours and delays across the system. To ensure the safety of vulnerable populations, MATA is providing dedicated transportation support starting at 10:00 AM today. Shuttles are currently transporting patrons from the Frayser-Raleigh, Gaston, and Gaisman areas to the nearest 24-hour warming centers, including the Ed Rice and Orange Mound facilities.

Emergency Shelters and Warming Centers

In response to the extreme cold, the following warming centers are active and open to the public:

  • First Baptist Church (200 East Parkway North): Operated in partnership with the Hospitality Hub for those experiencing homelessness.
  • Ed Rice Community Center: Open as a 24-hour warming facility.
  • Orange Mound Community Center: Providing 24-hour emergency shelter and warmth.

For those needing transportation specifically to the Hospitality Hub location, staff can be reached at 901-486-0939 during operating hours.

Utilities and Municipal Services

Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) reports that all primary systems are functioning normally, though crews are on standby to address localized outages caused by ice accumulation. To report a power outage, residents should call 901-544-6500. Additionally, the following city services are impacted today:

  • Memphis Public Libraries: Operating with reduced hours and limited locations. Please check the digital library portal for remote resources.
  • Memphis Parks: Current facilities are under restricted operations. Regular park schedules are expected to resume Monday, February 2, at 8:00 AM.
  • Memphis Animal Services: MAS urges all residents to bring pets indoors. Under city ordinance, owners must provide dry bedding and unfrozen water if pets are outdoors briefly. Report animals in danger by calling 901-545-COPS.
