City Council Agenda and Session Notification

Following the conclusion of recent committee sessions, the Memphis City Council has officially released the agenda for the upcoming regular session scheduled for Tuesday, February 17, 2026. As of noon today, Friday, February 13, residents can access the full list of ordinances and resolutions through the City Council Office. Major items expected on the docket include deliberations on the City Employee Compensation Task Force findings and zoning requests for the downtown district. Residents wishing to provide public comment during the upcoming session must register their intent by submitting a comment card to the Sergeant-at-Arms before the start of the meeting.

MLGW Utility Service and Billing Alerts

Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) has issued several critical updates for the current billing cycle following the severe winter weather that impacted the region in late January. Residents should take note of the following service advisories:

  • Resumption of Disconnections: The temporary moratorium on service disconnections for non-payment, which was enacted during the sub-freezing weather, has officially expired. MLGW has resumed standard disconnection procedures as of February 6. Customers facing financial hardship are urged to contact the utility to establish payment arrangements.
  • Higher Billing Warnings: Officials are cautioning residents that February utility statements may reflect significantly higher charges. This is attributed to record-breaking energy consumption during the recent cold snap rather than rate increases. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) remains open for eligible households seeking financial aid.
  • Introduction of PowerPay: The utility has officially launched PowerPay, a new customer-centered prepay service formerly known as MLGW PrePay. This allows residents to purchase utility services in advance and monitor real-time usage via the mobile app.

Public Facility and Library Reopenings

Community infrastructure continues to return to full operations this week. The MLGW Whitehaven Community Office, located at 1111 East Shelby Drive, is now fully open to the public following extensive renovations aimed at improving customer service experience. In other municipal news, Mayor Paul Young has appointed Dr. Eric D. Harris as the new Director of Memphis Public Libraries. While the appointment is subject to council confirmation, Dr. Harris has already begun coordinating with staff to expand neighborhood programming for the spring season.

Public Works and Sanitation Status

The City of Memphis Solid Waste Division reports that residential garbage and recycling collection schedules have stabilized after the disruptions caused by icy road conditions earlier this month. While yard waste collection may still experience slight delays in specific zip codes, regular gray and-blue cart services are operating on their standard weekly timelines. Residents are encouraged to leave missed carts at the curb and report service gaps through the 311 city services portal.
