Shelby County Board of Commissioners Meeting

The Shelby County Board of Commissioners is scheduled to hold a regular public meeting today, Monday, February 9, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The meeting will take place at the Vasco A. Smith, Jr. County Administration Building. Following several administrative closures earlier this month due to inclement weather, the commission is expected to address pending legislative items and infrastructure reports. Members of the public are invited to attend or view the proceedings via the official county live stream.

MLGW: Disconnection Resumption and Billing Alert

Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) has issued a public service announcement confirming that service disconnections for non-payment have officially resumed as of late last week. The temporary suspension of disconnections, which was implemented during the recent winter storm, has expired. Customers with outstanding balances are encouraged to contact MLGW immediately to arrange payment plans and avoid service interruption. Furthermore, the utility warns residents to expect higher-than-average utility bills this month due to record-breaking energy consumption during the sustained freezing temperatures in late January.

Education and Campus Operations Updates

The Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) district has resumed normal operations today, February 9, following a nearly two-week period of closures and modified schedules. All school sites and administrative offices have returned to in-person instruction and standard working hours. Parents and guardians should note that the school-choice application window, which was delayed due to the winter weather, is now scheduled to open tomorrow, February 10, at 10:00 a.m. Additionally, the University of Memphis Lambuth campus has officially returned to normal operations and in-person instruction as of this morning.

Solid Waste Collection Recovery Schedule

The City of Memphis Solid Waste Division is currently operating on a recovery schedule to resolve backlogs caused by the recent severe weather. Residents who experienced missed garbage or recycling pickups are advised to leave their carts at the curb until they are serviced. Solid waste crews are utilizing overtime and extended hours to complete Monday and Tuesday routes. In separate public works news, the city remains in the bidding phase for the abandonment and closure of six raw water wells at the North Water Treatment Facility; interested contractors must follow official filing deadlines as previously published.

Public Health Service Notice

The Shelby County Health Department has restored full services at all municipal clinics following weather-related disruptions. Standard operating hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. are back in effect. The department continues to offer free Hepatitis A vaccinations for high-risk individuals at several locations, including the Cawthon and Hickory Hill clinics. Residents are advised to call the health department hotline to confirm service availability before traveling to regional clinics.
