Official City Notice: Winter Weather Service Adjustments and Safety Advisories

Winter Weather Service Adjustments and Emergency Closures
Due to the ongoing winter storm recovery and hazardous road conditions, the City of Memphis remains under a State of Emergency as of Wednesday, January 28, 2026. Residents are urged to limit travel while Public Works crews continue 24-hour snow and ice mitigation efforts across the city. More than 2,000 tons of salt and brine mix are being deployed to clear primary and secondary roadways.
- Transit Services: The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) is operating limited snow route service today from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Service is restricted to five primary routes: Route 11 (Frayser), Route 39 (South Third), Route 42 (Crosstown), Route 50 (Poplar), and Route 52 (Jackson). Both the William Hudson and Airways Transit Centers are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Solid Waste Collection: The City of Memphis Solid Waste Division has suspended all garbage and recycling collection services today because of icy road conditions. Residents should keep bins off the streets until regular service resumes.
- Education and Courts: Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) remain closed for a third consecutive day. Additionally, Memphis Municipal Courts and the City of Memphis Court Clerk's office are closed through today to ensure the safety of employees and the public.
Utility and Public Safety Notices
Public service agencies have issued critical alerts regarding utility management and emergency response protocols during this inclement weather period.
- MLGW Updates: All Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) Community Offices are closed today. While MLGW has advised that customers may stop dripping faucets as temperatures begin to stabilize, residents are encouraged to keep cabinets open and thermostats set to at least 55 degrees. MLGW will not perform service disconnections for non-payment during these extreme weather conditions.
- EMS Surge Protocol: The Memphis Fire Department has activated an EMS Surge Period. Under this protocol, stable patients will be transported to the closest appropriate hospital rather than a facility of their choice to ensure ambulances remain available for life-threatening emergencies.
- Traffic Safety: Public Works and Engineering officials remind drivers that any dark traffic signals caused by power interruptions must be treated as four-way stops.
- MPD Inclement Weather Policy: The Memphis Police Department's winter weather policy remains in effect. For minor crashes with no injuries or drug/alcohol involvement, drivers should exchange information and file a report at a precinct within ten working days rather than waiting for an officer at the scene.
Public Health and Municipal Meetings
The Shelby County Health Department continues to maintain a health advisory following a confirmed case of measles exposure at the Memphis International Airport. Individuals who were at the airport on December 30, 2025, or January 3, 2026, should monitor themselves for symptoms such as high fever and a red rash through the end of this month. If symptoms appear, residents are instructed to call their healthcare provider before arriving at any clinic.
Despite the weather, the following municipal meetings are scheduled for today at City Hall and associated facilities:
- Board of Adjustment Meeting: 2:00 p.m. at 125 North Main Street, City Council Chambers.
- MCCC Board Meeting: 3:00 p.m. at 255 North Main Street, Room 101.
