What police say happened

Memphis police are asking for the public’s help identifying a suspect accused of an armed carjacking reported early Friday, January 16, 2026, at a convenience store on Shelby Drive.

Officers responded at 4:09 a.m. to a report of a carjacking at the Fast Trac located at 3292 Shelby Drive. Police say the victim’s vehicle, a 2017 maroon Nissan Rogue, was taken by a male suspect described as someone the victim knew by the name “J Mafia.” The suspect was reported to be armed with a gun.

Police said the Nissan Rogue was recovered a short time later, unoccupied, near the intersection of Holmes Road and Apollo Road.

Suspect description released

Investigators described the suspect as a medium-complexioned male, 30 to 35 years old, about 5 feet 2 inches tall and approximately 150 pounds.

  • Clothing: black hoodie, black pants, blue slides
  • Weapon: black handgun

How this case fits into a broader pattern

The incident reflects a recurring pattern seen in multiple recent Memphis-area carjacking reports: robberies occurring at or near gas stations and convenience stores, often during overnight or early-morning hours, and frequently involving suspects reported to be armed with handguns. In several Memphis cases documented over the past year, stolen vehicles were later recovered unoccupied, suggesting some vehicles may be taken primarily for short-term transportation rather than long-term possession.

What police are asking the public to do

Police are urging anyone with information that could help identify or locate the suspect to report it. Tips can be provided to Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.

Police emphasized that the suspect was reported to be armed, and the public should not attempt to approach or confront anyone they believe may be involved.

What is known—and what remains unclear

Authorities have not released surveillance images or additional identifying details in the public summary, and no arrest has been announced in connection with the Shelby Drive case as of Monday, January 19, 2026. It is also not clear whether investigators believe the suspect may be linked to other carjacking reports in the city.
