Donation drive aims to expand access to prom attire for Memphis-area students

The Memphis Police Department (MPD) has opened its annual Prom Closet donation drive, accepting new or gently used formalwear intended for students preparing for spring prom events. MPD said donations will be received through March 30 at Tillman Station, located at 426 Tillman Street.

The initiative, now in its fifth year, is designed to collect prom dresses, suits, and accessories that can be offered to students at no cost. MPD has framed the effort as a practical support program meant to reduce financial barriers that can prevent students from fully participating in milestone school events.

What’s being accepted and where items go

Donations are being accepted at Tillman Station through the end of March. MPD has emphasized formalwear and prom-related accessories, with items expected to be suitable for high school prom dress codes.

  • Prom dresses and other formal gowns
  • Suits and formal menswear
  • Accessories such as shoes, ties, jewelry, and similar items

MPD has indicated that the purpose of the collection is to stock a “closet” where students can select outfits ahead of scheduled prom dates, helping them attend events with appropriate attire without added household expense.

Student shopping dates and location

MPD said students will be able to shop the Prom Closet on April 10 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on April 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shopping event is scheduled to take place at Juvenile Intervention and Faith-based Follow-Up, located at 254 South Lauderdale Street.

Donations are scheduled to be accepted through March 30, with student selection dates set for April 10–11.

How the program fits within MPD’s community outreach

The Prom Closet operates as a seasonal community-support effort that complements broader outreach activities conducted through MPD stations. While the department’s primary responsibilities are public safety and law enforcement, MPD has periodically used station-based initiatives to connect residents with resources and services, particularly for youth and families.

For donors, the current drive window provides a defined period to contribute items that may otherwise go unused. For students, the scheduled April shopping dates consolidate access ahead of peak prom season, allowing time for fitting and planning.

MPD has encouraged community members to contribute formalwear in wearable condition and to deliver items to Tillman Station before the March 30 deadline.
