City Hall Hosts Flurry of Committee Meetings

Today, Tuesday, March 10, 2026, marks a significant day of legislative activity in Memphis as various City Council committees convene to discuss the city's infrastructure, housing, and developmental future. Following the schedule established by the Council's legislative calendar, the morning sessions began at 9:00 AM with concurrent meetings of the MLG&W Committee and the Parks & Environment Committee. These sessions are critical for reviewing utility updates and the management of city-owned green spaces, particularly as Memphis moves further into its spring planning season.

The legislative agenda continues throughout the day at 125 N. Main Street. At 10:15 AM, the Libraries and Neighborhood Improvement Committee is scheduled to meet, followed closely by the Housing and Community Development Committee at 10:20 AM. These meetings are expected to touch upon Mayor Paul Young’s ambitious goals for the city, including his previously announced strategy to deliver 10,000 affordable new homes by 2030. Later this morning, the Economic Development and Tourism Committee and the Personnel and Government Affairs Committee will hold their respective sessions at 10:30 AM and 11:05 AM. The day's committee work will conclude with a session of the Planning and Zoning Committee at 2:00 PM, where members will review local land-use documents and development petitions.

Shelby County Boards Address Fiduciary and Governance Matters

While the City Council focuses on committee work, Shelby County government is also active today with several high-level administrative meetings. The Shelby County Retirement System Board is meeting at 10:00 AM in the Richards Conference Room at 160 North Main Street. This session requires a physical quorum for all voting matters related to the county's pension and retirement obligations. Immediately following, the Shelby County OPEB Trust and an Ad Hoc Committee for the Retirement Board are also scheduled to meet to discuss post-employment benefits and fiduciary strategies.

Political Context: New Leadership in District 9

Today’s meetings follow a major development from the Shelby County Board of Commissioners. On Monday, March 9, the commission voted to appoint Matthew Szalaj as the interim commissioner for District 9. Szalaj, who has been serving as a special assistant to policy for Mayor Paul Young, was selected to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Edmund Ford Jr. Szalaj will represent the district until the general election in August 2026. This appointment is viewed by many as a move that could strengthen the policy alignment between the Mayor’s office and the county commission, particularly in areas of youth services and fiscal responsibility.

While the committees are in session today, the full Memphis City Council is not scheduled for a regular legislative vote until Tuesday, March 24, 2026. Residents wishing to follow today’s committee proceedings can view live streams or archived videos through the city’s official digital portals.
