Morning Traffic Overview

For commuters heading into the city or navigating the surrounding counties this Friday, February 27, 2026, the primary obstacles remain several long-term infrastructure projects. While major arteries like I-40 and I-240 are largely clear of active daytime lane closures, specific bypasses and state routes are experiencing significant restrictions that may add time to your morning drive.

Major Roadworks and Arterial Closures

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) continues its comprehensive maintenance and reconstruction schedule across Shelby and Fayette counties. Motorists should be aware of the following active work zones today:

  • I-269 NB (Fayette County): A bridge repair project between Mile Marker 3 and Mile Marker 4 has reduced the interstate to a single lane. This restriction is expected to remain in place through May 31, 2026. Expect slower speeds and merging delays when traveling through the southern portion of Fayette County.
  • State Route 3 (Shelby County): Northbound and southbound lanes between Log Mile 3 and Log Mile 4 remain reduced to one lane each way. This project is part of a multi-year construction effort slated to continue until early 2027. Drivers are encouraged to use alternative north-south routes if possible.
  • State Route 277 (Shelby County): Maintenance near Log Mile 0.0 is reducing the roadway to one lane from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM today. This will impact local traffic moving through the area during both the morning and evening rush hours.

TDOT Paving and Interstate Maintenance

The ongoing $160 million investment into Shelby County highways remains active. While TDOT typically schedules most paving and resurfacing operations for I-40, I-240, and I-269 during overnight hours to minimize daytime disruption, commuters may still encounter shoulder closures or shifted lanes where equipment is staged. Please exercise caution and adhere to posted speed limits in these work zones to ensure the safety of maintenance crews.

Public Transit and MATA Updates

The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) reports that all bus, trolley, and MATAPlus services are operating on a standard schedule today. Following the recovery from winter weather disruptions earlier this month, full service levels have been restored across the network. Riders can use the MATA Tracker or the GO901 mobile platform for real-time bus locations and individual route status updates.

Local Congestion Alerts

In addition to roadworks, localized congestion is expected near the University of Memphis area. The FedEx Institute of Technology is hosting the GiveCamp Memphis event starting today. While no formal street closures are reported for the event, increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic along Central Avenue and nearby campus streets is likely throughout the day.
