Icy Roads and Snow Routes: Saturday Commute Impacts Across Memphis

Winter Storm Recovery: Icy Conditions on Saturday
As Memphis continues to recover from the major January 2026 North American winter storm, commuters should exercise extreme caution this Saturday, January 31. While primary arteries like I-240 and I-40 have seen significant clearing, secondary roads and neighborhood streets across Shelby County remain treacherous. City Public Works officials have warned that low temperatures overnight have turned slush into immovable ice blocks, particularly in residential areas and on shaded overpasses. Drivers are advised to reduce speeds and allow for significantly longer braking distances.
MATA Public Transit: Snow Routes in Effect
The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) has activated its Winter Weather Safety Plan for today. Transit service is currently limited to 13 expanded snow routes to ensure the safety of both passengers and operators. The following routes are operational as road conditions allow:
- Route 1 – Union
- Route 2 – Madison
- Route 8 – Chelsea & Highland
- Route 11 – Frayser
- Route 19 – Vollintine
- Route 36 – Lamar
- Route 39 – South Third (Note: This route is currently ending at Shelby Drive due to severe icing further south)
- Route 40 – Stage & Lauderdale
- Route 42 – Crosstown
- Route 50 – Poplar
- Route 52 – Jackson
- Route 53 – Summer
- Route 57 – Park
Commuters relying on MATAPlus should note that service is restricted to dialysis and essential medical transportation only. All riders are encouraged to monitor transit apps for real-time detour information, as several bus lines are deviating from standard paths to avoid steep inclines or uncleared side streets.
Construction and Infrastructure Alerts
Despite the weather, several long-term infrastructure projects continue to impact local traffic patterns. On Lamar Avenue (US-78), construction for Phase 2 widening remains active between Shelby Drive and the Raines/Perkins Road interchange. Drivers should expect narrowed lanes and occasional shifts in the traffic flow in this corridor.
Work on the I-55 Bridge replacement project, recently named Kings’ Crossing, is in the preliminary stages with right-of-way coordination. While the main bridge remains open, motorists may notice increased activity near the recently completed Crump Boulevard roundabout. Additionally, the multi-year modernization project at Memphis International Airport has moved into a new phase for Terminal B, which may impact departures level access. Travelers are urged to arrive early and check with their airlines for weather-related flight delays.
