Evening Maintenance on I-240 and Daytime Roadworks on Airways Blvd to Impact Thursday Commute

Morning Commute Overview
Memphis commuters can expect relatively typical traffic flow this morning, Thursday, February 12, 2026, as the city continues its return to normalcy following last week's winter storm. With Memphis-Shelby County Schools having resumed their full schedule earlier this week, drivers should prepare for standard school-zone traffic and increased congestion near major campuses during the morning rush. Fortunately, dry road conditions and seasonal temperatures in the 50s are providing favorable travel conditions across the I-40, I-55, and I-240 corridors.
Major Roadworks and Lane Closures
Several ongoing construction projects may impact your travel times throughout the day. Motorists are advised to keep an eye on the following areas:
- I-240 Evening Maintenance: Starting tonight at 9:00 p.m., maintenance crews will be performing repairs on the overhead Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) on I-240 at Mile Marker 28.4. This will result in temporary lane closures on both the North and Southbound sides until 6:00 a.m. Friday.
- Airways Boulevard: Expect intermittent daytime lane closures on SR-277 (Airways Blvd) between South Trezevant Street and South Parkway East. Workers are installing ADA curb ramps from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., which may cause delays near the Spottswood area.
- Lamar Avenue (SR-4): Significant widening activities continue on Lamar Avenue. The speed limit remains reduced to 45 mph from south of Shelby Drive to the Raines/Perkins Road interchange. Additionally, the speed limit on Shelby Drive is reduced to 35 mph at the Lamar intersection.
- Poplar Avenue: Widening projects on East Poplar Avenue (SR-57) from Fletcher Road toward I-269 may result in daily intermittent lane shifts. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic.
Public Transport and Local Events
The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) has confirmed that all fixed-route and MATAPlus services are operating on their normal schedules today. While the winter weather detours from earlier in the month have concluded, riders are still encouraged to use the MATA Tracker for real-time bus locations.
In the Downtown area, a Land Use Control Board meeting is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at 125 North Main Street. Expect slightly higher pedestrian activity and limited parking near City Hall. Later this afternoon, a public meeting at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library on Poplar Avenue may increase local traffic in the University district between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
