Incident prompted lane and ramp closures during hazardous post-storm driving conditions in Memphis

A vehicle was left partially hanging over the edge of an Interstate 40 overpass near the Sycamore View Road exit in Memphis after the driver lost control on icy pavement, creating a dangerous roadside recovery operation and disrupting traffic in the area.

The incident occurred during a period of lingering winter weather impacts, as drivers across the Mid-South contended with slick road surfaces and reduced traction following snow and ice in the region. Traffic camera imagery from the Tennessee Department of Transportation showed the vehicle resting at the overpass edge, prompting an emergency response and a carefully managed removal effort.

Authorities said the driver spun out and the vehicle came to a stop in a precarious position. No injuries were reported. By late evening, crews were still working to remove the vehicle safely, and traffic restrictions remained in place to protect responders and motorists while recovery equipment was positioned on the elevated roadway.

  • Location: I-40 overpass area near the Sycamore View Road exit in Memphis
  • Cause described by police: loss of control and spinout on hazardous pavement conditions
  • Reported injuries: none
  • Traffic impacts: closure of the far-right westbound lane and the westbound entry ramp during the recovery

Traffic management during such incidents typically involves closing lanes closest to the hazard to create space for tow operations and to reduce the risk of secondary crashes. Overpass recoveries can require additional precautions because of limited work areas, elevated drop-offs, and the need to anchor or stabilize a vehicle before it is moved. In winter conditions, those risks can increase if road surfaces remain slick and visibility is reduced.

Drivers were urged to treat roadways as hazardous as long as ice persists, even after snowfall ends and major routes appear passable.

The Sycamore View corridor is a heavily traveled segment of I-40 in northeast Memphis, and even short-term lane closures can quickly produce bottlenecks, especially during evening travel periods. Officials continued to emphasize caution on area interstates as crews addressed weather-related incidents and as conditions evolved following the storm.

Motorists approaching the area were advised to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert for lane changes and emergency vehicles while the scene was cleared and normal traffic patterns were restored.
