Public Service Announcement: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Observance

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 19, 2026, the City of Memphis has announced several major service adjustments. All City of Memphis government offices, including City Hall, community centers, and libraries, are closed today. Essential emergency services, including the Memphis Police Department and Memphis Fire Department, remain fully operational. Regular administrative operations will resume on Tuesday, January 20.

Solid Waste Management Schedule Adjustments

The Division of Solid Waste Management has issued a revised collection schedule for the holiday week. Residents are advised of the following changes to ensure efficient service:

  • Monday Customers: There is no trash, recycling, or yard waste collection today. Residents should place their carts at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20, for makeup collection.
  • Wednesday through Friday Customers: Collection for the remainder of the week will proceed on the regularly scheduled service days.
  • Team Waste Customers: All Team Waste customers will experience a one-day service delay. Monday routes will be serviced on Tuesday, and all subsequent service days this week will shift forward by one day.

Excess trash and yard waste services will be limited throughout the holiday week. Residents are encouraged to secure all waste properly to avoid neighborhood littering during the adjusted pickup window.

Public Health Alert: Measles Exposure Monitoring

The Shelby County Health Department continues to monitor a public health investigation regarding potential measles exposure at the Memphis International Airport. Travelers and employees who were present at the airport during the exposure window of December 30, 2025, through January 3, 2026, are still within the 21-day symptom observation period. Health officials recommend that individuals monitor for the following symptoms through January 24:

  • High fever and cough
  • Runny nose and red, watery eyes
  • A red rash that typically begins on the face and spreads downward
  • Small white spots inside the mouth

If symptoms develop, residents are strictly advised to call their healthcare provider before arriving at any medical facility to prevent further exposure. The Health Department is also offering free flu vaccines later this month, with a community clinic scheduled for January 24 at the Temple of Deliverance Church of God in Christ.

Upcoming City Council and Board Meetings

While no legislative sessions are held today due to the holiday, the Memphis City Council is scheduled to convene for its next regular board meeting on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 125 North Main Street. Additionally, the Division of Housing and Community Development recently announced new TVA funding availability for energy-efficient home repairs. Residents interested in weatherization programs are encouraged to contact the division to review eligibility requirements for the 2026 fiscal year.
